Jobs for 16 year olds and above - on our Apprenticeship Programs

If you have just left school or are aged 16 to 18 years old, why not consider a career in Retail or Butchery.  Our apprenticeship programs allow you to train whilst being paid.  Being an apprentice with Walter Smith will give you a solid foundation for building a future career in Food and Retail Management.

You will be required to complete 4 parts to the Apprenticeship training:

  1. An NVQ level 2 (or 3 in the case of an advanced apprentice)
  2. do a technical food manufacturing certificate
  3. understand your Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  4. and achieve a level of Key skills (numeracy and communication) that is sufficient for your role

As part of the Retail or Butcher's Apprenticeship Program, you can expect a weekly wage of £120 for 16 - 17 year olds and £140 for 18 - 19 year olds.  The company pays this wage as you would be employed by the company.

Apprentices will be enrolled as a student of Dudley College for their apprenticeship training program.

Each Apprentice, will be based at one of our shops, the shop location may change during the training plan so that they see other situations.

Technical skills (as needed by Walter Smith) will be delivered at the “Walter Smith Food Academy” in Dudley.

Dudley College will also deliver Key Skills at the above, or at the College Campus, also in Dudley

Reasonable Travel costs will be paid – for travel from home or the designated shop to the College.

Applicants for the apprenticeship program must complete an application form answering all sections in full.

Download one here:

After we receive your application form, they will be assessed accordingly and a selection process will take place which will involve interviews, and could involve some testing (but not formal school style exams!)

During the Apprenticeship Program, the company  will consider if the individual is suitable for a permanent job in this type of work.

If/when the apprentice completes their Apprenticeship program successfully they might be offered a job, but there is no guarantee of a job because the number of vacancies is limited.

There is a career structure in the company, which means that once qualified there are promotion opportunities.

The Awarding Body for the NVQ and Technical certificate is the FDQ (the Food and Drinks Qualification Awarding Body).
